2.0 SkyActiv-G 2WD High Spec (2014)
Bought new, Owned for 2 Years
Fuel Economy: 7.0 km/litre (14.3 L/100 km), RON95, Mileage: 1,500 km/month
    - Handsome
    - Sporty
    - Good Handling
    - Skyactiv Tech and top notch safety specs given
    - Ride is little uncomfy sometimes due to firmed suspension setup
    - Wind noise > 100km/h
    - Bose sound system overrated
    - Always "ON" eco mode behaviour leads to frustration sometimes, should have the real switchable sport, normal, eco mode to choose from
To Improve
- Wind noise >100km/h
- Real eco, sport, and normal mode to change the car behaviour instead of always ECO mode "ON" now
- Slightly softer ride to create comfy experience

2.0 SkyActiv-G 2WD High Spec (2014)
Bought new, Owned for 1 Year
Fuel Economy: 15.0 km/litre (6.7 L/100 km), RON95, Mileage: 1,000 km/month
Looks of the CX5 is really good. Compared to the CRV which is the CX5's direct competitor, the CX5 looks much better than the Honda on the outside. The front grille gives it a very imposing look, and so does the rear. What is interesting is for the price, it looks too good. Especially in the blue colour that is used in the promotional material. For once, I chose the blue over Soul Red on a new Mazda. Mind you, don't forget this car was launched in 2012 and still looks fresh!

Interior design is actually not too bad. It is significantly better than the CRV which looks dated and the Tuscon that feels a bit overdone. What I really like about the CX5 is how the interior feels quite driver orientated. When you are in the driver's seat, you feel like the whole car wraps around you. Considering the size of the car, I would say I didn't feel like I was driving an SUV. It has really decent visibility, and not to mention, with the reverse camera and huge mirrors, it was a joy to park this car always.

In terms of technology, SkyActiv is genuinely impressive. The fuel economy is surprisingly good for its size, and the rather smooth transmission quickly goes to a higher gear for maximum economy. Also what is quite impressive is the amount of standard kit you get on the car. Again, considering the price, the 2WD high spec has leather seats, satnav with reverse camera, auto lights and wipers, keyless entry and all for less than the CRV2.0. Plus, the safety features are rather complete too with DSC Dynamic Stability Control and 6 airbags.

The 2.0l SkyActiv engine is an interesting engine. While economical, it has a decent amount of power. What is also impressive is that considering this is not a turbocharged unit, it feels responsive and seems to have good pickup. In the city, it allows you to quickly get that opening in the lane without much fuss.

But if at all, the handling of the CX-5 is what bought me over. You have to test drive the car yourself to believe how well it handles on the road. In the straight roads at highway limits, the quiet cabin and well damped suspension allows you to glide over the bumps in the road without much drama. But when the twisty bits come, this SUV really doesn't feel like a lumbering SUV but more like a family hatch like a Focus or Golf. It barely rolls about for its size and the steering is responsive. I'd say the CX5 has to be one of the best, if not the best driver's SUV and really says Zoom Zoom all over it. Genuinely follows Mazda's "Be a Driver" philosophy.
Space is not the CX5's strong point unfortunately. The front is OK, not extremely spacious compared to the CRV. As for the rear, the CRV despite the lack of leather seats in the 2.0 version, feels more comfortable with the nice soft seats compared to the CX5. Also boot space is somehow a bit smaller in the CX5 and there are not that many magic tricks you can do with the CX5 compared to the CRV.

Quality and ergonomics is a bit of a hit-miss with the CX5. I was left a bit disappointed with the CX5 as although the design looked good, the interior fit and finish is not so good. The leather seats feel like they used PVC instead of the leather, I felt that the smoother grain used by Hyundai and Honda felt a bit more convincing. Then there is the dashboard materials which feel a bit too cheap. The touchscreen while it has TomTom nav, the response is a bit on the slow side. But the two things which was unacceptable by Mazda was the SD card slot for the nav near the driver's knee, it looks so cheap and like an afterthought! And then there is the push start button. I had to search for the button some times, as unlike some cars like the Germans or the Hondas, the button is blocked a bit by the steering. From a safety point of view, in case you need to force shutdown the car, in an emergency, I find that would be a potential issue.

No LED DRL is a bit of an oversight but not really Mazda MY's fault. A facelift will fix it.

The transmission while smooth and fuel efficient, tends to go to 6th gear too fast. I know this is good for economy, but sometimes you have to drop a gear or 2 just for the pickup. A bit annoying, but can be solved with a (hopefully) update from Mazda.
To Improve
A new transmission program that allows the gears to hold a bit longer in sportier driving would be nice.

Probably a few magic tricks with the seats will be good too.

But most of all, buck up on the material quality and fit and finish. It's such a pity to see such a nice looking car with a nice feature list and price with such disappointing seats.

    Good in fuel consumption, 6.1L/100km
    Handling and steering respond
Engine power and pickup, not under power for suv with 2.0L engine
Very bad bulit quality (or maybe i am the one who received 'defect car'
So much rattling sound, seat belt, trunk area, dashboard(a well known rattle noise if you search in google), sun vissor, knocking at front part, knocking sound when make u turn
Right wheel arc leaking, got muddy trace on inner wheel arc and water inside tyre spare compartment
Engine oil leak on timing casing and my car currently at service center for 4 day already
To Improve
A lot of thing need to be improved especially in quality control.
Service center must cover steering wheel before doing maintenance otherwise they will drive your car with oily hand.
Bermaz should not confuse people with free maintenance yet provide sub standard item.

2.0 SkyActiv-G 4WD High Spec (2014)
Bought new, Owned for 2 Years
Fuel Economy: 14.0 km/litre (7.1 L/100 km), RON95, Mileage: 1,000 km/month
    - The most attractive and stylish exterior and interior design compared to its same class.
    - Decent engine power for city driving and highway cruising.
    - Best handling in the town competing with the C-segment SUVs.
    - Reasonable rear legroom for 3 person
    - Fully-equipped with plenty of features like keyless-entry, directional Bi-xenon headlights and many more.
    - Impressing sound system
    - Enough confidence to drive on any road conditions including off-road, thanks to the 4WD system and high ground clearance.
    - Paddle shifters should be seen in this car.
    - Interior design is nice however the quality is amazingly poor, for example the plastic cover and steering cover can be bend easily even when a small pressure is applied, exposing the metal inside !
    - Sky-active technology is awesome but not the gearbox, not as smooth as mentioned, especially when more power is needed to overtake, gearbox will confuse when to up-shift nor down-shift, leaving the engine rev-ing high on a low gear, creating lots of unpleasant noise while the car is still accelerating slow.
    - TOMTOM GPS is one of the major downside of this nice car, not responding so frequent that I have to remove and reinsert the SD card in order to bring it back alive.
    - Not enough storage compartment
To Improve
In general, CX-5 is still an amazing to drive !
17" sport rim is a bit small on this car, at least 18" would look way more "powerful" .

2.0 SkyActiv-G 2WD High Spec (2014)
Bought new, Owned for 2 Years
Fuel Economy: 11.6 km/litre (8.6 L/100 km), RON95, Mileage: 2,000 km/month
    1) Fuel efficiency - Low fuel consumption is one of the main selling point of the Skyactiv Technology, average consumption is about 8.6 L/ 100 km. Although not as low as the advertisement claimed (6.9 L/ 100 km for FWD), but it has the best fuel economy among its main competitors.

    2) Engine - Even though it's just a 2.0L, but the Skyactiv Engine is very willing to perform whenever and wherever you want it to. It sounds pretty good when you rev it and has more than enough torque to move this 1.5 ton metal from 0 - 100 kph in 9+ seconds.

    3) Handling - Featuring Mazda Zoom Zoom handling, this car certainly won't let you down during cornering or high speed maneuver. Good feedback from the steering even when driving above the national speed limit and agility during low speed maneuver in the parking lot. Overall the handling may not be top notch but it's best in class.

    4) Safety features - 5 Stars rating from both Euro NCAP and ANCAP speak it all.

    5) Appearance - It's one of the most eyes catching SUV in the market now and it's the most aesthetic in its segment.

    6) Roominess - The car is roomy and comfortable enough for 5 adults on board. Boot is sufficient to load 2 large and 2 medium to small luggage.

    7) Material - Soft touch material can be found on the dashboard and 4 doors which make the car more classy when comparing with its main rivals.

    1) Gearbox - The Skyactiv 6-speed automatic gearbox is smooth but as it's designed to maximize fuel economy, you will probably be in gear 6 even if you are just driving at 60 km/ h. Thus, a sudden need of acceleration such as overtaking, the gearbox will rev up for too long before it figured out there's a need of downshifting. It's quite embarrassing when the gearbox rev so loud but the car doesn't accelerate at all when you fully press the throttle but luckily there's a remedy which you are allowed to switch to manual mode where you can fully command the gearbox.

    2) Rattling sounds - Rattling sounds is "available" even for the CBU unit. Rattling sounds come from several compartments such as from the front driver side door, lower part of the dashboard and etc.

    3) NVH - Wind noise can be heard as soon as you hit 80 km/ h.

    4) Suspension - Annoying sound occasionally produces by the front suspension when go over bump especially during raining days.

    5) Drive shaft - Annoying sound produces when turning the steering to the left (maximum).

    6) Sub-par service - Engine oil which provided in the free services is semi-synthetic engine which vastly affected the potential of the engine in term of acceleration. Engine failed to perform 0 - 100 km / h in 9+ seconds as soon as using the prescribed engine oil by the service center.
To Improve
1) Full kit of i-ACTIVSENSE should not be omitted and should be included in ALL the variants which currently selling in Malaysia.

2) DRL - Using yellowish conventional bulbs as the DRL in today is rather outdated and spoilt the overall aesthetic.

3) Lighting - The lighting of the car should fully incorporates LED technologies or even more advance lighting technologies in order to be more stand out in term of appearance.

4) Service - Services provided by service centers is not up to par and MUST improve immediately.

5) Rear aircond vent.

6) GPS - Lifetime FREE update of TomTom Navigation system.

7) Bose - Bose doesn't sounds superior as it should be.

8) NVH - Better NVH without compromising the fuel economy.

2.0 SkyActiv-G 2WD High Spec (2014)
Bought new, Owned for 2 Years
Fuel Economy: 11.0 km/litre (9.1 L/100 km), RON95, Mileage: 2,000 km/month
-Fuel Efficient, getting almost the same mileage as my myvi, being a bigger and heavier vehicle.
-Handling with considerably less roll and damping is well judged, not a jarring ride even with the whole family onboard.
-Driving position is spot-on helped by the electric adjustments on the drivers seat. Feels very cosseting to the driver.
-Clever tonneau cover is just so convenient
-Smooth gear changes with reasonable power
-Fit & Finish on my cbu car is top notch. No rattles or squeaks as yet.
-Leather seats and Bose stereo with built in GPS
-19'' rims and tyres suit the car well but oem tyres will be very pricy.
-Too much plastic trims/accents on the exterior which will stain easily with polish. Very difficult to clean up as the plastic is textured
-Stopping power from the brakes feel inadequate. And looks really small with the 19" rims.
-Front right squeaking sound when going over bumps. Known defect of the lower arm bush and will be replaced under warranty.
To Improve
Great vehicle to own, however, the service from Mazda Malaysia need to be improved. Drawn towards the free 3yrs servicing, the wait times at the official service center is long. Resorting to authorised service centers, I was charged for miscellaneous items other than the free engine oil and oil filter.

Spacious and great fuel economy as compared to my previous car of japan local assembled. For Miri City driving, still manage average 600km per fuel tank even on some spirited driving.

Drove from Miri, Sarawak to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah after 1 month taken delivery of my 2.0 CBU. Effortless carrying 4 adults and a child throughout the Journey.

RM160k for a 2.0 CBU, worth every penny.

Front passenger seat should also be electronically controller.
Service package, should follow the international standard of using 0W20 or 5W30 grade Fully Synthetic M-oil with PE01-14-302A instead of B6Y1-14-302 m-oil filter. According to international review, both can be used, but PE01-14-302A is better suited for skyactive engine of newer generation.

Personal opinion on items lacking;

    - Skyactiv Technology really save fuel and smooth in driving.
    - Stylish design of body and inner part attract my eyes.
    - Reasonable price, value for money.
    - The car seats leather is in good quality and comfortable; not even feeling hot under the sun.
    - The liftgate at the back is hardly to close perfectly.
    - Very dissatisfied with the Luggage Compartment Light (boot light) which is too dim and very blurry!

While countries around us is using the genuine standard engine oil and oil filter during routine maintenance, Mazda Malaysia is using barely "suffice" standard part and consumable for their free service & maintenance. A great car deserves its best part and consumable to bring the driver - us more Zoom-zoom.

2.5 SkyActiv-G 2WD (2014)
Bought new, Owned for 1 Year
Fuel Economy: 12.0 km/litre (8.3 L/100 km), RON95, Mileage: 3,000 km/month
    - Good power delivery and torque with the 2.5cc version
    - Good equipment level (CBU 2.5) - Swivelling Xenon lights, BOSE sound system, etc
    - Good quality interior
    - Handles like a hatchback even if it's an SUV
    - Fuel consumption is excellent - average of 550km with a full tank of RM90 even when stuck in jam in KL daily for 1.5 hours
    - Good enough boot space
    - USB system doesn't work well, whole playlist resets itself when you start the car again, does not resume
    - wind noise is quite loud when travelling at 110km/h
    - You love to drive an SUV and leave the supposedly cooler sports car back home
To Improve
Fix the USB system. My 4 year old KIA Forte can handle MP3s and folders much better than the CX-5 and at least when I stop halfway through a track, I can resume listening!

Mazda Cx5 have a spacious trunk to keep things on it, and it have a comfortable space to sit in, skyactiv engine really save our fuel. It has the Bose sound system and let me have a comfort drive and listen jazz and others
The spring of the car, when pass by a bump, there will have a NGEK sound.

Try to improve more on bigger horsepower on this car

2.0 SkyActiv-G 2WD Mid Spec (2014)
Bought new, Owned for 1 Year
Fuel Economy: 12.0 km/litre (8.3 L/100 km), RON95, Mileage: 800 km/month
    - The Skyactiv engine offers great fuel economy (roughly 500km on a full tank, mindful driving can increase this even further).
    - A relatively smooth and refined driving experience, with acceptable acceleration and top speed, and handling similar to a sedan.
    - Reasonably high-quality materials and finish for its class (even the CKD version). The seats and dashboard feel good to touch.
    - Eye-catching contemporary design with curves in all the right places. Arguably the best looking compact SUV in its price range.
    - Reliability has been good after 1 year of ownership.
    - The Mazda Service center (PJ Federal Highway) has been friendly, courteous and helpful. They promptly solved a small issue I had with my alarm going off randomly.
    - The 2.0 variant feels ever so slightly underpowered. A little more zoom-zoom would have been nice for overtaking.
    - The wind noise is highly noticeable after the car exceeds 100 km/h. So much so that it partially drowns out the radio.
    - Speaking of radio, the speakers could have been better. The Bose system was replaced with generic low quality speakers in the CKD version.
    - This car really needs rear air conditioning vents. It takes quite a few minutes for the rear to cool down on a warm day, even when the air conditioning is on full blast. By this time my child is usually sweating in her seat.
To Improve
- Rear air conditioning vents.
- Just a touch more power (the 2.5 variant should solve this)
- A better sound system would be nice
