Overall Rating

As a family car, there is no faulting the updated 2019 Nissan X-Trail range. It's one of the quietest and most comfortable SUVs in its class, and for the first time comes with Nissan Connect and Nissan Intelligent Mobility. The 2.0 litre models feel lacklustre when compared to their turbocharged rivals, but that can be overlooked if you value convenience and comfort over performance.

For
  • Refined, quiet cabin
  • Supremely comfortable seats
  • Nissan Intelligent Mobility with AEB!
Against
  • Lacklustre performance for 2.0 litre models
  • Cabin feels outdated when compared against rivals
Performance

Performance is perhaps not the X-Trail's strong suit in general, but the 2.5 litre and 2.0 litre hybrid models offer a decent punch off the line, with adequate pulling power when overtaking at highway speeds. The base 2.0 litre unit however, leaves much to be desired. A CVT gearbox is standard across the range, providing a smooth driving experience that is most welcoming in urban settings.

Ride & Handling

The Nissan X-Trail was never meant to be an agile SUV, and the updated range continues to prioritise comfort over deftness. There are certainly more dynamically superior SUVs out there for roughly the same money, so it's best to really dial into your needs. You wouldn't want a stiffly-sprung SUV with elderlies in the car now, do you?

Comfort

This is easily the X-Trail's trump card. Few SUVs within the price bracket can match the X-Trail when it comes down to cabin comfort. The Zero Gravity-inspired seats can't be matched, and the extra layers of insulating materials further reduce ambient and engine noise.

Safety

The facelifted X-Trail also scores highly in this department, largely because of Nissan Intelligent Mobility. It features Forward Collision Warning, AEB, Intelligent Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, and Intelligent Around View Monitor with Intelligent Object Detection, most of which are only available in premium or luxury vehicles. The fact that the X-Trail comes with these is nothing short of spectacular.

Space

Non-hybrid models have the benefit of a third-row seat, which honestly accommodates two children at best. Adults will struggle to fit comfortably at the back, but it's fairly useable on short trips. Opt for the 2.0L Hybrid and things turn for the better, at least for small families. Although it loses out on the third row seats, passengers in the second row benefit from the extra legroom.

Value

On the whole, the 2019 Nissan X-Trail facelift offers a marked improvement in terms of comfort and cabin refinement. There's little in the performance department to shout about, although the top 2.0L Hybrid does make up for the shortfall. For maximum value, we suggest taking a good hard look at the 2.0L Mid or 2.5L 4WD.
