Well, that didn’t take long. BMW Malaysia has officially launched the iX, which is available in two versions, namely the xDrive40 and xDrive40 Sport. Pre-bookings have already begun, with prices start at RM419,630...
Starting this year, electric vehicles will not be saddled with import and excise duties, which means those of you who are looking for zero-emissions toys can enjoy significantly cheaper buy-in rates.
While the BMW iX's looks is up for debate, the electric SUV's shocking sticker price in Malaysia is hard to argue with. Yours from RM420k, the iX xDrive40, dare we say, is a bargain for what it is.
UPDATE: The BM...
BMW Malaysia has added the BMW iX xDrive50 to its online configurator, revealing a pricetag of RM546,800, which represents a premium of RM143k over the base xDrive40's RM403,800 price tag. The iX xDrive40 Sport pric...
Love it or hate it looks aside, the iX is a quality electric SUV with keen handling and an inviting, practical interior. It still drives like a proper BMW, although its agility and ride comfort are deeply compromised by the considerable weight. Sport variant highly recommended for improved looks and necessary spec upgrade.
At long last, we have finally gotten our hands on a review unit of the BMW iX. The fully electric SUV is Munich's latest and greatest, and can be had in this entry-level xDrive40 or the swankier Sport model.
My first purchased the BMW iX40 as their first electric vehicle (EV) in 2023, drawn by BMW's reputation for producing quality EVs since the launch of the i3 in 2013.
Initially, the design of the iX seemed odd to the reviewer, but it grew on them over time.
The iX has a distinct BMW look, with the iconic kidney grille, LED headlights, and muscular, angular lines.
The car's size is notable, occupying a large presence on the road and featuring 22" rims.
The rear electric tailgate spreads the width of the car, providing ample storage space in the boot.
The interior features unique and eco-friendly elements, such as leather tanned with olive leaf extracts and recycled materials.
The cabin is spacious, with a flat floor maximizing legroom for rear-seat passengers.
Little touches like crystal-finished controls and an electrochromatic panoramic roof add to the luxurious ambiance.
Rear seats have individual contouring, and there are USB Type C ports on the front seat backs for charging devices.
The iX incorporates advanced technology, including a curved screen with digital gauges and infotainment system.
Adaptive cruise control, stop/go functionality, and adaptive regenerative braking enhance the driving experience.
The ride quality is smooth, with excellent suspension and comfort levels comparable to high-end luxury cars.
The car's dual motors deliver power efficiently, producing 326hp and 620Nm of torque, enabling a 0-100km/h time of 6.1 seconds.
Despite its weight, the iX achieves impressive range and offers fast-charging capabilities.
Overall, i appreciates the iX's design, interior comfort, advanced technology, and driving performance, highlighting its suitability as a high-quality EV.
Amplified body motions: As an SUV with a taller ride height, the iX experiences amplified lateral motions when driving over uneven roads, leading to some rocking or movement in the cabin. While the damping is well-tuned and the body control is solid, it may not match the level of stability found in lower-riding sedans or vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz EQS.
Materials quality: While the iX utilizes sustainable materials, some of the plastics used in the interior may not meet the expectations of a premium brand. However, the overall build quality is satisfactory.
Limited rear visibility: The iX's design and high window lines may slightly limit rear visibility, making it important to rely on the 360-degree camera system for assistance, particularly in tight spaces.
Limited front storage: The iX does not have a front trunk (frunk) or user-serviceable items under the bonnet, as BMW discourages owners from opening it. This may be a minor inconvenience for those accustomed to having additional storage space in the front of the vehicle.
Enhanced body control: The iX could benefit from improved body control to reduce amplified lateral motions when driving over uneven roads. This would enhance stability and provide a smoother ride for occupants.
Upgraded materials quality: While the iX utilizes sustainable materials, BMW could focus on enhancing the quality of certain interior plastics to further elevate the premium feel and match the expectations of a luxury brand.
Front storage options: Adding a front trunk (frunk) or providing user-serviceable items under the bonnet would offer additional storage space and convenience for owners. This would align with the expectations of many electric vehicle buyers who appreciate front storage compartments.
Enhanced software features: Continual software updates to improve functionality, add new features, and address any bugs or performance issues would ensure that the iX remains up to date with the latest advancements and customer expectations.
Price: The iX40 is positioned as a more affordable option compared to the iX50, but the price point could still be a barrier for some customers. BMW could explore options to further reduce the price or introduce more accessible financing options to make the iX40 more accessible to a wider range of buyers.
Range: While the iX40 offers a range of 416km, it may be beneficial to extend the range further to meet the expectations of customers who require longer driving distances. Increasing the range would enhance the convenience and practicality of the vehicle.
